What Can I Expect During My Implant Removal Surgery?

The procedure for breast implant removal is similar to breast augmentation surgery. There are multiple varieties of this procedure, en bloc, total capsulectomy, and a capsulectomy. The techniques for the surgery could change depending on your reasons for wanting the implants removed, it is important to consult with Dr. Plant about the breast implant removal surgery at his Toronto office. If the skin has been stretched out or is starting to sag, then a breast lift procedure may need to be done as well. Once your skin has healed after the explant procedure, the doctor will assess your breasts to see if a lift is needed.

Am I the Right Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

Breast Implant Removal Toronto

There are many reasons why you may want to undergo breast implant removal surgery in Toronto. Breast implants are not life-long devices and should be exchanged every 10 to 15 years. There are also many reasons a woman may choose to have her implants removed entirely rather than replaced.

Whether it’s because they want a different aesthetic or no longer want to worry about the potential for future surgery, some women decide they no longer want implants. This is by far the most common reason for breast implant removal.

Some women choose to have their breast implants removed because they have recurrent issues with capsular contracture, a condition that results from the hardening of the normal scar tissue that forms around an implant, causing pain and a change in the appearance of the breasts.

Often Dr. Plant can revise the breast augmentation and, using one of several techniques, allow the patient to continue with breast implants. In some cases, the problem is so severe that the only solution would be to remove the implants entirely and perform a capsulectomy to get rid of the scar tissue.

A small percentage of women feel they are having a reaction to their breast implants, causing them to feel unwell, with symptoms that can include a lack of energy, joint/muscle pain as well as gastrointestinal issues. After having every other medical cause ruled out many of them opt to have an en-bloc removal of their implants (which includes removing the implant with the entire capsule).

Many of these patients do find relief from their symptoms once the implants are removed, but not necessarily all of them.

Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA -ALCL)

Another (very uncommon) reason is that some individuals who have Allergan Biocell texturized implants may develop Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA -ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a type of cancer that originates from the immune system. If caught early it is quite treatable with capsulectomy (and sometimes chemotherapy), however, if it goes untreated it could possibly spread to other parts of the body.

The main sign of this occurring is a sudden swelling in one of the breasts after having had the implants for many years. Even though BIA-ALCL is uncommon, if this happens it is important to get checked by a plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Plant, to see if BIA-ALCL is forming so you can be treated as quickly as possible.

How to Prepare for a Breast Implant Removal

Before a breast implant removal procedure, you must take lab tests to ensure you are fit for the surgery. Some lab tests you may need to take include a complete blood count with platelet, clotting time, bleeding time, and a chest X-ray. Once your surgeon approves your eligibility, you will need to prepare in the same way that you did when you had your breast augmentation procedure.

Secure your transportation home from the surgical facility. Your movement will be restricted after the surgery, and it is important that you have a companion to help you get home safely.

It is also important to schedule time off work, accomplish household chores in advance, and prepare your meals for at least a week. Prepare your bedroom with comfortable blankets and enough pillows for support.

Check all current medications and supplements with your surgeon prior to surgery. Anti-inflammatories and some vitamins like vitamin E, fish oil, and others must be stopped for a time since they can thin your blood and thus increase bleeding during surgery.

You should also refrain from smoking for four to six weeks before and after the procedure to prevent slower incision healing. On the day of the surgery, do not eat food eight hours before your breast implant removal to avoid aspiration and vomiting during the procedure.

How Long Is the Downtime from Breast Implant Removal?

During your consultation, Dr. Plant will discuss how long it will take before you can return to normal daily activities after undergoing an explant procedure. Once your surgery is complete, you will receive a list of aftercare instructions. These instructions will include information such as:

  • Use of drains, bandages, or gauze that will be used during and after the procedure
  • Symptoms that may arise post-op
  • Any signs of a potential complication

Most women are able to return to work and their normal activities within a week of their procedure. It is not uncommon for your breasts to feel tight or heavy for a few weeks following the procedure, they are adjusting to having the implant removed. The total healing process for explant surgery will take several months.

Refrain from performing any strenuous activities that could risk blood clotting. A surgical bra must be worn for a time to support the breasts as they heal.
